We’re proud to introduce paper-hammer.com, the on-line version of our brick-and-mortar store in downtown Seattle that shares space with Marquand Books. The sale of each one of our products helps to revive the economy of Tieton, a small orchard town in Central Washington that is an incubator for artisan businesses under the association of Mighty Tieton.

Our products combine thoughtful design, careful production, a respect for tradition, and smart use of contemporary technology. We believe that the future belongs to creative thinkers and doers who put style, imagination, energy, talent, and creative ambition into everything they do.

Have a look around and visit often. We’ll keep listing fresh found objects, seasonal gifts, Northwest-inspired housewares, and letterpress and handmade paper goods.

Introducing Paper Hammer

Ed Marquand has logged some long, inspiring hours in the book arts studio in Tieton this month. Along with our printing and binding crew, he has been designing and refining the merchandise that we will feature in our new downtown Seattle store, Paper Hammer, located in front of the Marquand Books design studio. The shop opens December 2.

The shop and studios are at the corner of Second and Union, across the street from Benaroya Hall and kitty corner to the Seattle Art Museum. Paper Hammer will sell the chap books, notebooks, novelties, coasters, posters, cards, photo albums, limited edition books, and gift items that we produce in Tieton. The store will also carry a selection of books that we make for museums, collectors, and artists across the country. Carefully selected vintage and contemporary goods will round out our products.

Our new space also includes a small gallery, which will allow us to mount modest exhibitions and demonstrations about the work we do in Seattle and Tieton. Look for more to come about events and shows in the gallery space.

Paper Hammer will host an opening party December 2 during First Thursday. Save the date!

Seattle NPR affiliate KPLU recently ran this story on Ed Marquand’s work cultivating art, culture and commerce in a small town in the middle of Washington State. Maria Solorio, who does beautiful binding work in our letterpress studio, is also featrued.

The new Mighty Tieton Web site has just been launched. Home to Marquand Editions|Tieton’s growing line of gift products carried in museum and gift shops nationally, fresh businesses and events keep popping up in Tieton.

A new addition everyone at Marquand Books is excited about is the installion of a 1920s vintage Smyth Stitcher to bind short-run editions of hand-printed and digital books.

Have a look around for a few minutes, won’t you?

Closing Sunday: The Book Borrowers at Bellevue Arts Museum

This weekend is your last chance to experience The Book Borrowers, showing now at the Bellevue Arts Museum. It’s an innovative exhibition featuring books transformed into sculpture by 31 artists, including Washington State contributors James Allen, Alan Corkery Hahn, Casey Curran, and Jane Lackey.

Marquand has produced a special limited-edition book to complement the exhibit. The hardcover version is cloth-bound with an embossed title, and both hard and soft-cover versions were digitally printed, then bound by local artisan Chikabird with a string-tie closure.

Featuring full-color, accordion foldout pages for each artist included in the show, the book is a great way to keep a piece of the exhibition in your personal library. The books are on display at the exhibit but will also be available through the Marquand website in the near future, so stay tuned here to find out how to get your own copy.

The last day for The Book Borrowers is this Sunday, June 14, 12-5 p.m. at the Bellevue Arts Museum.

The Decider: Making Tough Choices Fun Again for Designers and Editors Everywhere!

Posted on February 06, 2009 | Design Ephemera | Leave A Comment

We’ve received loads of e-mails from clients and friends who have consulted The Decider for lighthearted advice about tough decisions, and are thrilled by such a positive response! Here’s a favorite from Diane Lovejoy, Publications Director at The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

I couldn’t DECIDE whether to send you chocolates or roses for gifting me with The Decider. So, I have opted for sending good old electronic kudos instead.

I have already consulted The Decider about whether or not to edit a rather inscrutable text. After spinning the pointer, I was delighted to have my own instincts validated with a clear answer: “Is that the best use of your time?”

Thank you, Decider, for saving me time and truly making my day!

All the best,
Diane

Here’s another testimonial, this time from a renowned museum director:

Since I started letting The Decider make all the decisions at my museum, our endowment has doubled, our membership has tripled, and I think my teeth might be whiter. Thanks, Ed, for making The Decider available to hard working museum professionals. Since I am no longer taxing myself with difficult decisions (or, for that matter, easy ones), I have more time to do a museum director’s real work: 1. take credit for everything 2. blame others for my blunders 3. collect a big paycheck, and 4. plan my next move.

And more praise from an important curator:

I just wanted to let you know that your “Decider” was a big hit around here. We have an institution-wide problem with decision-making, so maybe this is exactly what we need. No longer will we emerge from lengthy meetings having no idea what was accomplished! –Margaret

Let us know how The Decider has helped you! And for the record, we like Chocolate AND Roses.
