Jooyeon Park (born 1972, in Seoul, Korea; lives and works in Seoul) creates video and installation art, writings, and photographs that all touch upon the vulnerable psychological space of human existence and people’s indeterminate sense of longing. Consequently, her works reflect on movement, whether of people, places, or language, and the prolongation of time. In her artist book Passer-by (2008), she presents a fictional script between characters searching aimlessly for “something.” The book and related film and photos are derived from travelogues, cursory thoughts, and conversations that she shared with other artists and strangers whom she encountered during her three-month residency in Istanbul, Turkey. She offers the viewer these disjointed glimpses as a temporary oasis from the banal chaos of daily life. Likewise, her series of photographed benches, mats, and pyeongsang (wooden tables that Koreans use as seats) documents temporary stations where people often linger between life’s comings and goings.
